5th Flight Report, 2-06-2007

The Cruiser continues to cruise.  Morgan has been putting the hours on and the plane has been performing well.  The quest continues to get accurate low end airspeeds but they are tracking in on the upper and mid ranges. This is a situation that many have ignored in the past but it is important to develop honest numbers to insure builder satisfaction.  Some of the things that have been nailed down are an ability to maintain an average climb rate from ground to 6000' of 1800 fpm.  Although the plane has proven to be capable of much faster speeds the goal is to obtain something in the range of 120 mph at 3 gal per hour or less.  Without any adjustment of the initial prop pitch or any wheel pants we are seeing 110 at 3 gallons per hour so getting under 3 gal per hour at 120 should be a relatively simple task.   The plane seems to achieve cruise speed on about 35 hp and it should be capable of better efficiency with refinement. Even that starts to get the goal of "Aircraft Performance at Ultra-light costs."

The other parameter which has been shown is a takeoff roll of 420 feet.  Landing distance hasn't been possible to ascertain as nobody can be out on the runway (KDAB) to mark the touchdown spot.  Takeoff is easy enough to verify.

In all, we are very pleased with progress to date and the flying qualities have proven delightful.  Tuft testing is in progress and we hope to have video documentation of stall progression.  Get a step closer to the dream - Start your Personal Cruiser project now.
